Description

Documentary research and walkover survey carried out by Oxford Archaeology North in 2007 following a proposal by United Utilities to construct a new water main running 1600 metres adjacent to Bradford Lane. 21 sites of archaeological interest were identified through the documentary research and walkover. 17 were identified during the documentary research (including 5 CHER records and 4 Listed Buildings) 4 further sites were identified during the walkover. Four of the sites identified within the study area were considered likely to be affected by the development works and were previously unrecorded on the HER. One of these sites was a modern field boundary judges to be of no significance. A watching brief was carried out in June 2007 in order to investigate the se sites. Two trackways shown on the 19th century Ordnance survey map of 1882 survived as earthworks and were affected by the pipeline route. No archaeological remains were recorded during the watching brief for these features. A field boundary/ possible parish boundary that survived as an earthwork 1.5 metres high and 4 metres wide was observed during the topsoil strip. Very little of the nature of the boundary could be recorded due to the limited depth of the topsoil strip.
