Description

Archaeological evaluation relating to land south of Wheelock Street, Middlwich which has been identified as an area of archaeological potential, possibly containing medieval and later remains. Two trenches investigated to the rear of 57 Wheelock Street. A series of pits and ditches were identified within both trenches, cut into sand natural geology. Artefactual evidence suggested that these features essentially respected each other, with only minimal intercutting, also suggests that they were roughly contemporary. From the mid 17th - late 18th century. No evidence for activity earlier than Post medieval was identified during the course of the evaluation works, with the exception of four residual late medieval sherds of pottery. No suitable contexts were present for palaeo- environmental sampling.
