Description
An archaeological watching brief at Beeston Castle during footpath construction. Three cuttings shed light on the nature of the scarp slope which is on the north, west and south parts of the site periphery. Inside the boundary wall, a narrow level terrace exists at the same height as the external road. The steep scarpe slope which rose from this terrace is of artificial origin, and ended sharply where it met the natural hillslope (1). Some modern finds were said to have been recovered, but no archaeological material was recovered from the cuttings. Their locations were well away from the main areas of past human activity.
