Description
A watching brief monitoring groundworks during the redevelopment of the Grade II Listed Mansion House, undertaken partially because of the likelihood of preserved Roman remains at this location. The work was carried out intermittently between April and July 2008 during the reduction of ground levels in the cellars at the junction of Love St. and Forest St. The work demonstrated that a 1m thick modern concrete floor had been laid over the cellar wither replacing or sealing an earlier floor laid with hand-made bricks. The brick floor had been laid on c0.1m of puddled clay which itself lay over 0.02m of lime mortar. Below the layer of lime, a dirty backfill of heavy cloddy pale reddish brown sandy clay was removed to a thickness of c0.45m. No significant archaeological features were revealed and no undisturbed ground was identified.
