Site Event/Activity record ECH4430 - Report on an Archaeological Evaluation at Whitehall Site, Wilmslow, Cheshire

Archaeological evaluation following on from a preliminary assessment undertaken in 1991 for the route of the A34 Wilmslow Local Bypass. The intended route was destined to pass through the site of White Hall, a medieval moated manor which was demolished in the 1960's. The evaluation comprised a geophysical and ground probing radar survey (Stratascan) followed by five trenches positioned to investigate a negative anomaly possibly representing the moat, also an area of positive anomalies which appear to coincide with the site of buildings plotted on the OS 1882 map. Whilst not defining the position of the moat the trenches recorded various archaeological deposits/features, those which could be dated relate to activity from the 17th century onwards and include culverts, a line of sandstone blocks and bricks possibly representing a foundation or narrow path, also deposits of demolition debris and a 4m wide ditch interpreted as a 19th century land drain. A ditch and pit found in Trench 2 was interpreted as earlier, possibly medieval, features. (1)
