Description

An Archaeological Evaluation carried out at the Panorama Hotel, Halton during March 2008. The site lies within the bailey of Halton's medieval castle and shows evidence of being occupied since the 11th century. There has been a building on the site since at least 1840, with the standing building dating to the1860's. To the south of the building the garden was made up of imported garden soil dating to the nineteenth century, extending to a depth of 0.8m. This soil seals a demolition layer from the previous building that occupied the site, demolished around 1860. Within the north car park, bedrock was encountered at a depth of 0.7m below the tarmac. It appears that nineteenth century development, made up of outbuildings, extends down to the bedrock, indicating that post medieval activity would have destroyed any earlier archaeological features above the bedrock. A single rock cut feature was identified on the site, within the north car park. This was thought to represent modified bedrock to form foundations for an earlier structure. It was not clear what this structure was or its date due to the limitations of the evaluation trench.
