Description

The southern area of the site showed no archaeological features bar a nineteenth - twentieth century brick soak away. It did, however, show that a great deal of landscaping had been undertaken on the site to level the ground to make it more appropriate for gardens. This phase of activity dates to the construction of the Greenbank Centre in the early nineteenth century. The northern area revealed a series of structures to the north of the building, which could be seen on the 1910 OS Map of Chester. Below these structures, and within the front garden, agricultural plough soils containing Romano-British ceramics were identified. The lack of any later ceramics, combined with the lack of bone fragments common in later plough soils, supports the thought that this plough soil belongs to Roman activity on the site. This activity probably relates to extra mural agricultural practices linked to the Roman settlement at Heronbridge, a few hundred metres to the south of the site.
