Description
The archaeology of the site can broadly be divided into two phases of activity. The earliest phase is a light scatter of debris associated with domestic occupation. The material certainly has a Romano-British flavour to it, but hte lack of any pottery is unusual for a Roman site and the potential for this occupation to represent material from the early medieval period is worth considering. Unfortunately this could probably only be resolved through scientific dating.
The later phase of activity suggests that the site subsequently remained unoccupied until the post-medieval period. THe layer of debris observed at interventions I and III suggests that a dwelling may have occupied the site from the early 18th century; however, no trace of a building could be seen on the tithe map of 1840.
