Description

The field had been recently ploughed and the topsoil and sunsoil had been mixed to a loose dark grey-brown loam which contained dispersed coal and slate fragments, small sandstone fragments and occasional charcoal flecks. All finds were recovered from this layer. THe subsoil consisted of light brownish-yellow sand with patches of firm reddish-brown sandy clay. There were no indications to suggest the former presence of a Roman road.
