Description

It has been demonstrated that the top car park terrace contains evidence of truncated, potentially stratified Roman archaeology at a depth of c.1.78m below present ground level. The generic soil layer identified in test pits 2 and 4 and in some boreholes may represent a Roman, or perhaps later, cultivation horizon. The survival of this layer shows that there was no wholesale removal of archaeological deposits (not anticipated in this area of the city) but the potential for Roman archaeology (civilian settlement, industrial activity, field systems, burials) certainly remains.
