Description
The results of the investigation revealed significant Roman deposits at approximately 0.9m - 1.0m below the present ground surface.
At the eastern end of Trench 1 an undisturbed probable Roman soil horizon was recorded at 28.27m OD, where excavations ceased. The presence of Roman-British pottery and tegula in this deposit reflects Roman settlement within the vicinity. Trench 1 revealed modern structures in the western and central areas that have truncated archaeological deposits. These modern truncations exceeded the maximum depths of excavation.
Within Trench 2 Roman surfaces were encountered at a maximum height of 28.14m OD in Sondage 1 and at 28.08m in Sondage 2.
