Description
No figures supplied on the limited recording on this site. The present tiles were laid in the 1970's and the earlier tiles, together with their sand base, were laid in 1968. The earlier floor had consisted of wooden boards suspended over a dark soil. This dark deposit, [5] in Trench I and [7] in Trench II, contained artefacts of nineteenth century date, including broken window glass and burnt material. The spread of nineteenth century demolition material extends to a depth of at least 520mm below the present floor surface. As this material is not of great archaeological interest, there are no grounds for opposing a proposal to lower the floor by 450mm.
