Description

As with the watching brief conducted in 1992, there was no clear-cut evidence for pre-modern activity on the site. Although the boulder clay deposit recorded in 1992 was not recorded in 1993, a series of sands was noted. These perhaps correspond to deposit [16], a yellowish sand, noted in the earlier watching brief and found to overlie boulder clay. The lack of positive evidence for land-use is not ujnexpected; even in parts of Cheshire where early occupation is known from other sources, it had proved difficult to identify buried remains of contemporary activity. However, it is worth considering the status of feature [102], which was unlike anything else observed on the site, and feature [18] from the last watching brief. Neither produced any dating material, unusual in recent features, and so we may explore the possibility that they are prehistoric features. Such features, commonly interpreted as field boundaries, have been found in the vicinity of round barrows and, on occasion, have proved to pre-date the construction of the barrow cemetries. (1)
