Site Event/Activity record ECH4273 - The City Walls: 1993 Interim Report on the East Walls (Kaleyards)

This archaeological project was generated by a programme of restoration on a section of the East City Wall, when a stretch approximately 30m long was discovered to be in need of reconstruction as it was collapsing inwards. This proved to be due to the absence of a foundation beneath the inner face of the wall, which had been built merely on top of the remains of the Roman rampart and was therefore subject to subsidence. The outer face, which in part stood on Roman foundations laid in the bedrock, was generally stable.
