Description

The assessment demonstrated that exceptionally rich evidence for the Medieval landscape of Waverton survived well into the twentieth century. Ancient field boundaries, the earthworks of ridge-and-furrow cultivation, former marl pits and traces of the old pattern of lanes were all to be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and confirmed by field names and boundaries on the 1839 Tithe Map. This landscape has now largely vanished in the vicinity of Brookdale Farm: only to the east of Guylane Brook are there any remains of ridge-and-furrow. Although these have been degraded by ploughing there are still substantial earthworks. Elsewhere the former ridges are visible as soil marks, created when the butts where marled. Many of the field boundaries have been removed but the marl pits remain impressive features. THere is no trace of activity earlier than the Middle Ages around Brookdale Farm. (1)
