Description

The archaeological investigation comprised excavation for a solid base for the construction of a new promenade around the Roodee racecourse. To the south of the site, in front of the Grosvenor Bridge, nineteenth century make-up levels were identified underlying twentieth century topsoil and imported sand at an elevation of 0.56MOD, 0.45m below the present ground level. Elsewhere along the river face of the twentieth century sandstone retaining wall, a series of twentieth century silt deposits produced by the silting action of the river Dee were identified above the natural red clay. No archaeological features or deposits dating to earlier than the mid-nineteenth century were encountered during the investigations.
