Description
Moats rarely define the limits of a manorial complex as extra-mural buildings, such as demesne farm buildings and barns, were invariably excluded from the cramped moat platform. Therefore there is a possibility that medieval or early post-medieval structures may have existed outside the moat at Bewsey. The available documentary and cartographic evidence suggest that the demesne farm was located in the immediate vicinity of 'The Maltings' public house with additional farm buildings being within the 'Foreyard' to the east of the moat. However, it is possible that the demolished building was in existence by 1724 and could therefore have been considerably earlier. The two boundary features 27 and 28 may have originated as medieval or early post-medieval sub-divisions within the deer park, and may contain below-ground palaeoenvironmental evidence from their periods of construction.
