Description
The initial search of the documentation shows that an Ordanance Survey benchmark was cut into the stone cross base between the issue of the first edition 25" of 1872 and the second edition of 1910. The benchmark was not found on any of the surfaces revealed by excavation. We conclude that it must be on the side next to the ground surface. The cross base was not moved from its present position during the excavation.
We conclude that the cross was thrown down after 1910. Subsequent maps locate a benchmark to the north of the cross.
