Site Event/Activity record ECH4139 - Central Area Development, Runcorn, Cheshire: An Archaeological Watching Brief

The aim of the archaeological assessment was to ascertain whether the proposed Central Area Redevelopment, Runcorn, would damage or destroy below-ground archaeological remains and to record any features of significance brought to light by those groundworks. The desk-based assessment initially identified the location of possible remains through the examination of documentray sources. However, subsequent site inspection and the monitoring of below-ground works did not identify and in-situ archaeology or produce any artefactual evidence. THe principle explanation for the observed absence of archaeological remains is the high degree of post-industrial disturbance which has taken place throughout the area. In addition, it was clear that ground levels had been substantially raised through the deposition and compaction of demolition material and hardcore. At no time did observed groundworks reach depths where archaeological remains were encountered. The conclusion to be drawn, therefore, is that no in-situ archaeology was damaged or destroyed during intrusive ground works. However, this does not preclude the presence of remains at a greater depth.
