Description

An archaeological evaluation and watching brief undertaken prior to the expansion of Risley Landfill Facility. Aerial photography had shown evidence of a cropmark site (CHER 2764) in the area of the proposed development. This comprised three sides of a possible angular enclosure, with surrounding linear features. The evaluation was carried out on the 16th July 2003, and comprised two 17m trenches located in the area where the cropmark was sited. Three modem land drains and one tree-throw were revealed during the evaluation. Several fragments of ceramic drainpipe were recovered from the topsoil. No features of archaeological significance were revealed. The watching brief consisted of two visits to the area. Post-medieval land drains were revealed on site, but no archaeology of any significance was present.
