Description

This report contains the results of a rapid desk-top assessment, standing building appraisal and watching brief, undertaken intermittently between January and August 2004 on the site of The Stone House. The redevelopment site lies west of the mediaeval Friary of Warrington -founded c.1260. The Stone Houre itself appears to have been built as a high-status residence in the late eighteenth century. Accordingly, although much altered, fire-damaged and dangerous internally, and in a sorry state of repair, the Stone House was photographed and described prior to demolition. Following demolition of the house, the watching brief element of the project consisted of the excavation of two test trenches at the start of groundworks. It was demonstrated clearly that the site holds little archaeological potential and the watching brief was discontinued. Although the results of the project are disappointing overall, the results will assist in the future general management of archaeology in this area of Warrington.
