Description
New 33kv substation for Kingsley Fields being built under ref PUI/0434 (itself a renewal of an earlier approval). No archaeological condition attached. Large hole excavated to 2m plus in an attempt to find solid base for concrete raft. This has gone through 1m plus of modern material and 1m plus of dried organic material. Malcolm Reid claims to have seen worked wood in the spoil from this deposit during his visits but they were backfilled by the time MDL visited. This is presumably a northern outlier of the organic deposits present across the historic town. It looks however, quite dry and is severed from the main area of deposits by the modern swinemarket. In addition trenching to the west along the line of the relief road did not reveal the organic deposit. Organic stained sand was seen at c 2m under very recent material.
