Site Event/Activity record ECH4030 - Worleston Waste Water Treatment Works, Cheshire: Archaeological Watching Brief

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2004 during the topsoil stripping of a pipeline easement from Worleston Waste Water Treatment Works to Crewe Waste Water Treatment Works, Cheshire (centred on SJ 6698 5590). The site lies in an area of archaeological potential, with a Roman road (CSMR 1189/1/0) from Nantwich to Middlewich located directly to the north of the pipeline route. Also, a scheduled moated site and fishpond (CSMR 184/1/1) are located directly to the east of the route. There is also evidence of salt production in the area dating from the Iron Age through to the Medieval period. The watching brief revealed no archaeological features. Late nineteenth century pottery and modern building rubble were recovered from the topsoil. However, the horizon between the topsoil and the subsoil was fairly diffuse along much of the line of the route, and so stripping may not have reached a sufficient depth to reveal any surviving archaeology.
