Description
An evaluation comprising three trenches revealed that extensive cellarage has largely voided archaeological remains within the evaluation area. Furthermore, these cellars were only backfilled during the demolition of the Town Hall c.1971. The Town Hall (built in 1844) was believed to have replaced an older building known as the market hall (possibly a medieval structure). It is possible (on the evidence of the photograph taken during the demolition work) that elements of the buried cellarage may relate to this earlier building, and thus warrant some archaeological merit.
