Description

Archaeological evaluation on a car park on Mill Street in advance of redevelopment. The objectives were to identify and characterise the survival of eighteenth to nineteenth century workers housing and any other archaeological evidence. Nine trenches were excavated. The evaluation trenches revealed two phases of Victorian structures that correspond with the nineteenth century cartographic records of the site. Early nineteenth century cultivation layers were recorded in the western part of the site predating the Victorian structures. No archaeological features were found predating the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries. Waterlogged deposits were reported from this excavation (3).
