Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken over three days in April 2003 during works to provide a new vehicular access at St Bartholomew's Church, Wilmslow. The watching brief comprised the observation and recording of the removal of the original path surface, the widening of the pathway to allow access for cars and the excavation of trenches for the provision of drainage. The works took place within the medieval churchyard and the later nineteenth century extension to the graveyard immediately to the north-west of St Bartholomew's. A number of previously unrecorded gravestones were revealed during the course of the work including fragments of a memorial to a young man who died in the First World War. In addition, a large fragment of decorated building stone from an earlier church on the site was identified in the revetment wall located on the edge of the original course of the River Bollin. This was removed and will be displayed in the graveyard near the church.
