Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2000-2001 prior to the development of a By-Pass on the A41 at No Man's Heath, Cheshire. This work followed on from a previous evaluation at the site of Smithy Field, as part of the same development project, during which the remains of a house and smithy were discovered; ceramics and masonry found during this project hinted at a possible early date for the construction of these buildings. This watching brief along the road corridor only recorded a potential field boundary. However, a further examination of the area containing the smithy complex, during landscaping of the area, yielded additional remains of the domestic quarters, including walls constructed from hand-made brick and floor surfaces of terra cotta tiles.
