Description
An archaeological evaluation undertaken on the 12th of September 2001 at the former Royal British Legion site at Egerton Street, Stockton Heath, Warrington. The evaluation comprised the excavation and recording of three evaluation trenches. Despite the considerable archaeological potential of the site, located in an area of extensive Romano-British and earlier occupation, only a single feature, a pit of Romano-British date, was identified. Much of the area of the development site had been heavily disturbed by nineteenth century sand extraction recorded on the second and third Edition Ordnance Survey maps and later development of the site for the Royal British Legion club. It is, however, considered likely that the pottery kilns, recorded by Thomas May, were located within the area of sand quarrying identified on earlier Ordnance Survey maps, and that much of the pottery found in the pit was locally produced. Nevertheless, given the nature of the sand extraction identified on the site, it is possible that some further traces of Roman settlement will survive in small undisturbed pockets within the development area.
