Description
A programme of archaeological monitoring during groundworks associated with the construction of a new extension to the Old Red Lion, Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. The project consisted of the archaelogical monitoring of machine stripping and clearing prior to the commencement of foundation works associated with the construction of a new extension. The ground disturbance observed indicated little in the way of surviving archaeological remains, apart from modem drainage features and probably nineteenth century brick wall foundations. A small assemblage of post-mediaeval finds, dating from the seventeenth century and later, was recovered during the project. The results have shown a lack of survival of archaeological features and deposits in the immediate vicinity of the Red Lion.
