Description
An archaeological desk-top assessment and evaluation was conducted in advance of the redevelopment of land at Victoria Square, Stockton Heath, Warrington. The desk-top assessment found that the site was situated on the fringes of the Romano-British settlement located at Wilderspool. In addition to the evidence for Romano-British settlement, 'stray finds', mostly found in the early twentieth century, suggest that the area was settled in the Prehistoric period. Although much of the site was occupied by standing buildings, parts of the site had not been occupied by buildings for at least 150 years and therefore retained potential for in situ archaeological deposits.
A subsequent evaluation excavation found no evidence for deposits pre-dating the late nineteenth century and it appears that the site was either outside the area occupied by the Romano-British settlement or that any deposits had been destroyed by later activity.
