Description
An archaeological evaluation undertaken along the route of the Basford-Hough-Shavington Bypass. A preliminary desktop assessment had identified three areas of archaeological potential.
No acess was permitted to one of the areas, the remaining two areas were subject to geophysical survey and one area was evaluated by means of a metal detector scan, field walking, geophysical survey and the excavation of 16 linear trial trenches.
The evaluation indicated that the archaeological potential of two of the sites are low. A large collection of clay tobacco pipe bowls from one site was recoved from material assumed to be associated with seventeenth century attempts to reclaim and improve area of boggy group. An 'iron slag' deposit located immediatley above natural glacial subsoils appears to be of natural origin. Field name evidence suggested the location of a brick kiln, but no further evidence was found.
