Description
An archaeological evaluation comprising the excavation and recording of three evaluation trenches. The development site lay immediately to the north of St Elphin's parish church in Warrington. A now-abandoned meander of the River Mersey to the south of the church formerly provided the lowest non-tidal crossing of the river and provided a focus for early settlement in the area. In particular settlement in Warrington in the early medieval periods was centred on the motte and bailey castle known as 'Mote Hill' and the adjacent church of St Elphin which lay on the north side of the river. No significant archaeological features were identified during the course of the evaluation.
