Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment and field visit were undertaken in 2000 for the area surrounding Cherry Orchard Sand Quarry, Oakmere. Sites of interest close to Cherry Orchard Sand Quarry include a late prehistoric enclosure (CHER 848/1) and the site of a medieval longboat (CHER 847). Field walking around the area has also produced a large quantity of lithic artefacts. This region was also once within the Royal Forest of Delamere. After enclosure of the forest in 1812, the assessment area became part of an enclosure award. However, despite being situated within the forest, there is no evidence to suggest that the area was wooded in the post medieval period and, prior to the enclosure, it was probably open grazing. (1)
