Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land to the rear of 'The Lamb', Audlem, at the site of a proposed residential development. The site lies adjacent to the Church and a medieval kiln was discovered very close by in the 1940s. The evaluation consisted of a rapid desk-based assessment and geophysical survey, followed by the excavation of five trial trenches.
A trench rapidly excavated on the street frontage suggested that the archaeological potential of the site was low. The remaining trenches were located in the raised area, at the rear of the site. A linear feature was identified and probably formed the remains of a property boundary dating from the late seventeenth century. On the south side of the site, closest to the Church, a cluster of post holes of uncertain date were recorded and represent the remains of at least one timber structure. The character, stratigraphic position and total absence of associated datable finds from these features suggested a building of antiquity, speculatively, of Anglo-Saxon date. (1)
