Site Event/Activity record ECH3735 - Land Adjacent to Congleton Town Hall, High Street, Congleton, Cheshire: An Archaeological Watching Brief

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 1997 on land adjacent to Congleton Town Hall, centring on SJ 860 629. The development comprised the construction of a small structure measuring circa 2m by 3m, abutting onto the west side of the Town Hall; a small associated ramp to the south was also constructed. Two linear foundations were dug and monitored. In general, deposits were approximately 1m deep and comprise homogenous soil layers with little perceptible banding. A few pottery sherds dating between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries were recovered, also some modern material. In the area of the ramp, there were indications of a potential cobbled surface at a depth of circa 90cm. Additionally, the line of a ditch feature, aligned north-south, was noted. No datable finds were recovered from its fill, but it is thought to be of antiquity. A watching brief undertaken in 1996/7 during re-development immediately to the north also recorded the ditch feature. (1)
