Description

The University of Manchester Archaeological Unit Were commissioned by Lawson Price Environmental to undertake an archaeological watching brief during test pitting and borehole investigation at Castle Street, Northwich, Cheshire , an area of riverside land lying between the medieval town centre to the north-east and the Roman forts on Castle Hill to the south (centred SJ 656 737; Fig 1). Observation of the test pits was undertaken between the 23rd and the 31st January. This indicated that the whole of the proposed development area is covered in late 19th century and early 20th century deposits to depths of between 1.2m and 3.7m, and possibly to considerably deeper levels. This is probably the result of infilling after localised ground subsidence due to local salt extraction. No sign of the Roman Road, boundary ditch or brine pit were observed, although the site of a 19th century dock was located.
