Description
Following on from a programme of archaeological evaluation at Harbutts Field prior to the development of residential housing, two trenches were excavated in the lower part of Harbutts Field on 01/12/1995. In Trench 1 removal of the current topsoil exposed a plough-disturbed layer of sandy-silt, and a layer of redeposited sandy-clay, on sand identified as the natural sub-soil. The maximum depth of plough-disturbance to the sub-surface deposits was 600mm. Removal of the topsoil in Trench 2 revealed a surface with several distinct deposits. A plough-disturbed layer of clay-silt was identified, and on removal of this, two linear bands running NE-SW of sandy silt were observed in the sand sub-soil. No artefacts were recovered and the maximum depth of plough-disturbance was 510mm. Probably post medieval. (1)
