Description

Two evaluation trenches were excavated to a depth of 2.5m in the parade ground of Chester Castle, the area adjacent to A Block, to examine the cause of subsidence at this location. It was confirmed that the subsidence corresponds to the location of the moat of the medieval Castle. Trench I contained deposits interpreted as infilling to level the moat at the time of the construction of the present buildings between 1780 and 1810. Trench II had more mixed fills representing domestic rubbish disposal in the moat during the first half of the eighteenth century. With respect to the subsidence, it is likely that a much softer material than these fills lies at a greater depth.
