Description
An archaeological evaluation of a site between Lewin Street and the Trent and Mersey Canal in Middlewich was undertaken in May 1992. It comprised a desk-based assessment supplemented with trial trenching (9 trenches). The archaeological deposits recorded were 18th and 19th century in date, including remains relating to a school, a methodist chapel and salt works buildings. No evidence was found of features or artefacts earlier than the 18th/19th century indicating that the site was levelled in this period removing earlier deposits, such as those relating to the medieval salt industry which were anticipated.
