Description

On Tuesday 11 January 2000 a site visit was made to Ridley Hall (CSMR 331/1/1 and 2), Ridley (SJ5463 5476), whch lies c 1km to the west of the junction of the A49 with the A534 (Wrexham road), in order to observe works associated with the installation of a new septic tank. The earliest documentary references to a substantial house at Ridley Hall date to the later fifteenth century, when Sir William Stanley built a hall on the site. It seems likely, however, that this replaced an earlier medieval hall. All that now remains of the early phases of building is the gate house, which may be early sixteenth-century in date, the hall having burnt down in 1700. A manorial courthouse, referred to as the Star Chamber, is also recorded on the site. More recent farm buildings now occupy the site. In the event the hole for the new septic tank was water filled and nothing could be seen. The opportunity was, however, taken to examine the spoil but no artefacts were recovered. M D Leah 11.1.00
