Description
On 19.1.00 a visit was made to Nantwich Museum, Pillory Street, Nantwich to observe groundworks concerned with the erection of a new extension at the rear of the present museum (see accompanying annotated builder’s plan for exact location and form of the proposed extension). At the time of the visit, c 0.3m of material had been removed from the footprint of the proposed building. This deposit consisted of a dark soil containing much brick rubble and modern debris. No significant artefacts were recovered from the spoil derived from these groundworks. A deeper trench, excavated to a depth of c 0.5m along the northern limits of the new building, revealed that this same deposit continued to at least this depth, with increasing quantities of brick rubble occurring with depth.
Piles were being driven at the time of the site visit and these will, eventually, be installed around the whole perimeter of the proposed extension, forming a foundation for the walls but not resulting in exposure of any further deposits. In addition, a further 0.1m of material will be removed across the footprint of the building, with 0.3m being removed along the line of the main floor beam. The evidence from the northern trench indicates that these activities are unlikely to disturb any significant archaeological deposits.
