Site Event/Activity record ECH3419 - Watching brief during a section through the Fortress wall at 11a Nicholas Street in 1954 (Carlux Site)

Watching brief carried out during an extension at the premises of Carlux Electrical services in 1954. The turf rampart of the Roman fortress was observed along with a stone wall at which point a more detailed excavation was carried out. The wall was found to be the western end of building constructed in the toe of the rampart, typical of those previously discovered in the north wall. The building extended the full width of the excavation (c49ft) and two further cross walls were observed Substantial stone foundations for the Roman wall were also observed as well as the first rough coarse of masonry on the inner side (1).
