Description
Excavation of a trench for laying a watermain along the east side of Bridge St. in 1981 revealed several archaeological features (1). The trench ran up the length of Bridge St. in the carriageway 0.75m from the eastern kerb. Below the tarmac was a rubble foundation layer and then a substantial cream coloured mortar layer with cobbles 0.3m thick, 0.45m below ground level. Some soil was seen between the mortar and rubble foundation horizons. A rock-cut pit was seen directly outside 35 bridge St. with a drain running into its east side. Roman tile was found in this feature (1).
