Site Event/Activity record ECH3246 - Excavations at Chester Royal Infirmary, Bedward Row, 1977 (Chester)

Excavation on the south-east corner of land occupied by Chester Royal Infirmary, immediately north of Bedward Row. Four phases of occupation were revealed. The first phase consisted of an area of irregularly spaced stake holes delimited by drainage gullies, dated from the beginning of the second century. During most of the second century, rubbish, rich in finds, was tipped on the site. In the early third century, the rubbish was sealed by clay and soil deposits and another light timber structure was built in the north of the trench, together with a substantial drainage ditch running east-west. In the late third century, the building was demolished and the ditch silted up and sealed by areas of sandstone paving (1).
