Description

Excavations in 1949 recorded turf rampart recorded with evidence to suggest there was no timber revetment at this point. The base of the rampart was lined with logs to minimise movement of the rampart. Behind the rampart was a large oven with an ashpit and working platform extending for over 8.5m. Catalogue of Jet and Shale in the museum includes reference to this site (1) Excavations across the fortress defences in 1949 recorded the wall and rampart (2) Roman bronze from excavations (3) Referred to as Site No 37 in the City Defences Monograph (7)
