Excavations at Norton Priory in 1970 at the request of Runcorn Development corporation by F H Thompson, then of the Society of Antiquaries. The main purpose was to confirm that the priory church lay to the north of the standing remains of the west cloister range and to determine the general plan and extent of both the church and the other cloister ranges, and to obtain as much information as possible about the quality and condition of the buried portions of the monastic buildings. 10 trenches were excavated.
