Site Event/Activity record ECH3158 - The City Walls: Evaluation and Building Survey at the Kaleyards, East Wall, Chester in 1983

Continuation of the City Wall Consolidation programme along the East Wall in 1983, the third of three related events. The focus of this conservation work and a controlled excavation of the berm area, about 50m to the north of the Kaleyard Gate (4). Survey identified Roman structural evidence in the wall as well as produced detailed plans of the berm and extant wall (1). Two stretches of the Roman wall were identified and fully recorded, one of these produce evidence of a construction date after 150 AD and it is now thought that the wall may have been constructed c200 AD. New fragments of cornice have been found (3). Referred to as KI in the Defences Monograph (5) 2nd polygon indicates the location of the trench.
