Description

Archaeological excavations carried out in advance of the extension of the Infirmary between 1912 and 1917. Originally, the excavations were planned to last from 1912 to 1914, but were later extended to last five years until 1917 (7). The main significance of the site lies with the extensive Roman burial ground at this location, all burials by inhumation rather than cremation (8). The earlier phase of excavation was largely a watching brief, monitoring the excavation of trenches and recording burials as they were uncovered (7). A number of finds are relatively early, dating to the mid-first century (1), but the burials appear to date to the late second, early third century (8).
