Sections through Watling Street in the allotments south of Pinfold Lane. Small sections cut by Professor Newstead in 1927 showed the road consisted of a layer of broken, bedded in, well puddled clay, over which were two layers of roughly hewn blocks of sandstone. Coarse Roman pottery was found in and near the road (1).
