Description

Discovery of a wooden structure during the construction of a bungalow at St Anne's Lane, Nantwich in July 1985. Subsequent investigation by Liverpool University Archaeological Services were made. The tank consisted of two courses of edge set planks; the basal planks had tenon joints at both ends. This method of construction was favoured in Roman and Saxon times. The tank could represent a latrine or a brine trough. Although no pottery was recovered from within the tank, 43 sherds of Roman pottery were gathered from the area of the tank, comprising five wares - Samian, Oxfordshire colour coat, Severn Valley, coarse oxidised and black burnished.
